Mrs. Jane D. Walsh To All Instructors
Mrs. Jane Walsh is a retired Latin and Spanish teacher, U.S. Navy veteran, and Norfolk Master
Gardener. She graduated in the early 1970s from Montclair State University, NJ, and taught
Spanish 1-3 at her high school alma mater until joining the Navy in 1976. As a commissioned
officer, she worked in Administration and Naval Intelligence on both coasts, and was aide-de-
camp of the Commander, Iberian Atlantic Area in Portugal from 1980 – 1983. She has a
master’s degree in National Security Affairs from Navy Postgraduate School, Monterey,
California, where she met her husband, Stephen, of over 40 years. They have an adult son, a
percussionist, who lives in Indiana.
After retiring from the Navy at the rank of Commander, she returned to teaching and substitute
teaching both Spanish and Latin at high schools and middle schools in Norfolk, Virginia Beach,
and Austin, Texas, where she was the Foreign Language Department Chair at St. Michael’s
Academy. After retiring from teaching in 2016, Mrs. Walsh indulged in her fascination with
motion pictures, travel to New York city, skiing and snowboarding, and gardening. Lately, she
has become an aficionado of Korean TV dramas and rom-coms and is trying, with difficulty, to
learn Korean.
Her favorites are animated, independent, and foreign language films; jazz standards and
cabaret music; off-Broadway and Broadway shows; northeast pizza; Dunkin’, not Starbucks;
and the New York Yankees. She and Steve own a mixed breed dog named Ginger, and a cat
named Bu, both rescues. Jane is excited to be a part of the HSOBX community!
